Marathon Greece

Marathon is a town some 13-14 kilometres north of Rafina on the coastal 83 route. The first marathon was run when a messenger called Philippides was sent to run to Athens to deliver the result of the Battle of Marathon. This happened in the year 490 BC and the Greeks won this particular battle, defeating the Persians. The burial mound for 192 Athenians killed in the battle can be viewed to this day.

There is also a large lake at Marathon and a village with tavernas.

The road passes through the coastal town of Nea Makri which has a good beach and some lively tavernas.
